Plaza Martí

Plaza Martí, the town’s pleasantly spacious central square, has a charming bandstand and Remedios is the only town in Cuba to possess two churches on its main plaza. The most stunning edifice in Remedios is the Iglesia Parroquia Mayor de San Juan Bautista de Remedios 1 [map] (Mon−Fri 9am−noon, 2−5pm, or during Mass at other times, or seek out the church warden at the rear), bordering the east side of Plaza Martí. The old church, built in 1692 on the foundations of an earlier one, was severely damaged by a 1939 earthquake, but a millionaire penitent underwrote a 10-year renovation, discovering a gold painted altar and carved beams under layers of encrusted paint and false ceilings. The gilded altar is seen in its full glory when the lights are turned on.
